Key Hawaii Test Information

We have pulled out some important highlights of information related to the Hawaii state tests. But this list is not exhaustive. Please review the driver’s handbook for details on Hawaii state laws and for how to prepare for your written and practical driving tests. 

Identification requirements

Applicants must present acceptable documents establishing your identity/birthdate, residency, and provide your Social Security Number (SSN), if eligible. Documents must be original or certified copies. Applicants must not provide photocopies or self-laminated documents.

Age Requirements

Persons younger than 18 years of age must provide written consent from their parent(s) or legal guardian unless married or emancipated.

The minimum age to acquire an instruction permit is 15 1/2 years. You must hold a valid instruction permit for a period of 180 days before applying for a provisional license. The minimum age to obtain a provisional license is 16 years.

You may operate a motor vehicle upon any highway with an instruction permit only when accompanied by a licensed driver at least 21 years of age. If between the hours of 11:00 p.m. and 5:00 a.m., you must be accompanied by your parent or guardian.

Knowledge Test

The test contains questions on traffic laws, road signs and rules of safe driving. All questions are based on the materials found in a driver’s handbook.

Hawaii‘s knowledge test consists of 30 questions, of which 24 must be answered correctly to achieve a passing grade.

Vision Requirements

Any applicants requiring corrective lenses must wear them whilst taking the test. If the applicant fails the vision examination and it is determined that lenses are needed then the applicant will be required to wear them whilst driving.
