Key Illinois Test Information

We have pulled out some important highlights of information related to the Illinois state tests. But this list is not exhaustive. Please review the driver’s handbook for details on Illinois state laws and for how to prepare for your written and practical driving tests.

Identification requirements

Applicants must present acceptable documents establishing your identity/birthdate, residency, and provide your Social Security Number (SSN), if eligible. Documents must be original or certified copies. Applicants must not provide photocopies or self-laminated documents.

Age Requirements

In Illinois, teens can get a learner’s permit at 15, an intermediate license starting at 16 (after completing driver’s ed and required supervised hours), and a full unrestricted license at 18. Drivers under 18 face added rules such as adult-supervised driving with a permit, limits on passengers, and nighttime driving restrictions. Parents must give consent for anyone under 18 to be licensed.

Knowledge Test

The test contains questions on traffic laws, road signs and rules of safe driving. All questions are based on the materials found in a driver’s handbook.

Illinois‘s knowledge test consists of 2 parts: the rules test and the signs test. The rules test has 20 questions of which 16 must be answered correctly. The signs test has 15 questions, of which 12 must be answered correctly to receive a passing grade.

Vision Requirements

Any applicants requiring corrective lenses must wear them whilst taking the test. If the applicant fails the vision examination and it is determined that lenses are needed then the applicant will be required to wear them whilst driving.
