Key Indiana Test Information

We have pulled out some important highlights of information related to the Indiana state tests. But this list is not exhaustive. Please review the driver’s handbook for details on Indiana state laws and for how to prepare for your written and practical driving tests.

Identification requirements

Applicants must present acceptable documents establishing your identity/birthdate, residency, and provide your Social Security Number (SSN), if eligible. Documents must be original or certified copies. Applicants must not provide photocopies or self-laminated documents.

Age Requirements

Indiana’s Graduated Driver Licensing (GDL) program:

  • You can obtain a learner’s permit at age 15 (with driver education) or 16 (without driver education).
  • To get a probationary (intermediate) driver’s license, you must hold the permit for at least 180 days, complete 50 hours of supervised driving (10 at night), and be at least 16 years 3 months (with driver ed) or 16 years 9 months (without) when you apply.
  • During the probationary phase (before age 18), there are driving restrictions such as no passengers (for the first six months) and nighttime driving limits (e.g., 10 p.m.–5 a.m. at first).
  • Once you turn 18 (or in some cases 21), the full unrestricted license privileges apply and the “probationary” label is lifted
Knowledge Test

The test contains questions on traffic laws, road signs and rules of safe driving. All questions are based on the materials found in a driver’s handbook.

Indiana‘s knowledge test consists of 2 parts: the rules test and the signs test. The rules test has 34 questions of which 28 must be answered correctly. The signs test has 16 questions, of which 14 must be answered correctly to receive a passing grade.

Vision Requirements

Any applicants requiring corrective lenses must wear them whilst taking the test. If the applicant fails the vision examination and it is determined that lenses are needed then the applicant will be required to wear them whilst driving.
