Key Iowa Test Information

We have pulled out some important highlights of information related to the Iowa state tests. But this list is not exhaustive. Please review the driver’s handbook for details on Iowa state laws and for how to prepare for your written and practical driving tests.

Identification requirements

Applicants must present acceptable documents establishing your identity/birthdate, residency, and provide your Social Security Number (SSN), if eligible. Documents must be original or certified copies. Applicants must not provide photocopies or self-laminated documents.

Age Requirements

The rules for young drivers under the Iowa Department of Transportation Graduated Driver Licensing (GDL) system are:

  • Instruction Permit: Available at age 14, with parental consent and after passing a vision/knowledge test.
  • Intermediate (Provisional) License: Available at age 16, after having the permit for at least 12 months, completing driver education, and logging at least 20 hours of supervised driving. Passenger restrictions apply (e.g., one unrelated minor passenger for first six months, unless waived) and driving hours are restricted (no unsupervised driving between 12:30 a.m.–5 a.m.).
  • Full License: At age 17, if the driver has held the intermediate license for 12 consecutive months, had a clean record, and completed additional supervised driving hours.

Knowledge Test

The test contains questions on traffic laws, road signs and rules of safe driving. All questions are based on the materials found in a driver’s handbook.

Iowa‘s knowledge test consists of 25 questions of which 20 must be answered correctly to receive a passing grade.

Vision Requirements

Any applicants requiring corrective lenses must wear them whilst taking the test. If the applicant fails the vision examination and it is determined that lenses are needed then the applicant will be required to wear them whilst driving.
