Key Kansas Test Information

We have pulled out some important highlights of information related to the Kansas state tests. But this list is not exhaustive. Please review the driver’s handbook for details on Kansas state laws and for how to prepare for your written and practical driving tests.

Identification requirements

Applicants must present acceptable documents establishing your identity/birthdate, residency, and provide your Social Security Number (SSN), if eligible. Documents must be original or certified copies. Applicants must not provide photocopies or self-laminated documents.

Age Requirements

In Kansas the young-driver licensing process is as follows:

  • Learner/Instruction Permit: Minimum age 14.
  • Must hold that permit for at least 12 months and complete supervised driving (25 hours required before reaching 16) during this stage.
  • Intermediate/Restricted License: Minimum age 16. During this stage there’s a nighttime driving restriction (no driving between 9 p.m. and 5 a.m.) and a limit of no more than one passenger under 18 (non-family members) initially.
  • Full Privilege License: After at least 6 months of the intermediate stage or reaching age 17, the restrictions lift (nighttime driving and passenger limits are removed).
Knowledge Test

The test contains questions on traffic laws, road signs and rules of safe driving. All questions are based on the materials found in a driver’s handbook.

Kansas‘s knowledge test consists of 25 questions of which 20 must be answered correctly to receive a passing grade.

Vision Requirements

Any applicants requiring corrective lenses must wear them whilst taking the test. If the applicant fails the vision examination and it is determined that lenses are needed then the applicant will be required to wear them whilst driving.
