Key Kentucky Test Information
We have pulled out some important highlights of information related to the Kentucky state tests. But this list is not exhaustive. Please review the driver’s handbook for details on Kentucky state laws and for how to prepare
for your written and practical driving tests.
Identification requirements
Applicants must present acceptable documents establishing your identity/birthdate, residency, and provide your Social Security Number (SSN), if eligible. Documents must be original or certified copies. Applicants must not provide photocopies or self-laminated documents.
Age Requirements
Young-driver licensing rules in Kentucky under the Graduated Driver Licensing (GDL) program:
- Learner’s permit: Minimum age 16. You must hold the permit for at least 6 months before moving on.
- Intermediate (“provisional”) license: After the permit phase you can move to this stage, which includes supervised driving requirements (for example ~60 hours including 10 at night) and age minimums.
- Full/unrestricted license: Available when you reach 17 years old and fulfill the previous requirements.
- Important notes: While under age 18, drivers face extra restrictions (such as night-driving curfews, supervision, passenger limits).
Knowledge Test
The test contains questions on traffic laws, road signs and rules of safe driving. All questions are based on the materials found in a driver’s handbook.
Kentucky‘s knowledge test consists of 40 questions of which 32 must be answered correctly to receive a passing grade.
Vision Requirements
Any applicants requiring corrective lenses must wear them whilst taking the test. If the applicant fails the vision examination and it is determined that lenses are needed then the applicant will be required to wear them whilst driving.
