Key Louisiana Test Information
We have pulled out some important highlights of information related to the Louisiana state tests. But this list is not exhaustive. Please review the driver’s handbook for details on Louisiana state laws and for how to prepare
for your written and practical driving tests.
Identification requirements
Applicants must present acceptable documents establishing your identity/birthdate, residency, and provide your Social Security Number (SSN), if eligible. Documents must be original or certified copies. Applicants must not provide photocopies or self-laminated documents.
Age Requirements
Young-driver licensing rules in Louisiana under the Graduated Driver Licensing (GDL) system:
- At age 15, you can obtain a Learner’s Permit, after passing vision/knowledge tests and completing a driver-education course.
- The Learner’s Permit must be held for at least 180 days (6 months) and you must complete 50 hours of supervised driving, 15 of which must be at night.
- At age 16, you become eligible for an Intermediate (or “Class E”) license, provided you meet the permit-holding and supervised-driving requirements. Driving restrictions apply: no unsupervised driving between 11 p.m. and 5 a.m., and carrying more than one passenger under age 21 between 6 p.m.–5 a.m. (except family) is prohibited.
- At age 17, you may qualify for a full, unrestricted license once you’ve met the above requirements and maintained a clean driving record (no at-fault crashes, moving violations, curfew/drug/alcohol violations) for the required period.
Knowledge Test
The test contains questions on traffic laws, road signs and rules of safe driving. All questions are based on the materials found in a driver’s handbook.
Louisiana‘s knowledge test consists of 40 questions of which 32 must be answered correctly to receive a passing grade.
Vision Requirements
Any applicants requiring corrective lenses must wear them whilst taking the test. If the applicant fails the vision examination and it is determined that lenses are needed then the applicant will be required to wear them whilst driving.
