Key Maine Test Information

We have pulled out some important highlights of information related to the Maine state tests. But this list is not exhaustive. Please review the driver’s handbook for details on Maine state laws and for how to prepare for your written and practical driving tests.

Identification requirements

Applicants must present acceptable documents establishing your identity/birthdate, residency, and provide your Social Security Number (SSN), if eligible. Documents must be original or certified copies. Applicants must not provide photocopies or self-laminated documents.

Age Requirements

Young driver licensing rules in Maine:

  • Learner’s permit: You can apply at age 15, and must hold it at least 6 months, log 70 hours of supervised driving (including 10 hours at night), and be accompanied by a licensed driver age 20+ with 2 years’ experience.
  • Intermediate license: After the permit stage, at age 16 you may get an “intermediate license.” For the first 270 days, you may not drive between 12:00 a.m.–5:00 a.m., carry non-family passengers unless a licensed adult is present, or use a cell phone while driving.
  • Full/unrestricted license: After you’ve held the intermediate license for the required period (270 days) and if you are 18+ or meet clean-driving-record requirements, the restrictions lift.
Knowledge Test

The test contains questions on traffic laws, road signs and rules of safe driving. All questions are based on the materials found in a driver’s handbook.

Maine‘s knowledge test consists of 30 questions of which 24 must be answered correctly to receive a passing grade.

Vision Requirements

Any applicants requiring corrective lenses must wear them whilst taking the test. If the applicant fails the vision examination and it is determined that lenses are needed then the applicant will be required to wear them whilst driving.
