Key Maryland Test Information

We have pulled out some important highlights of information related to the Maryland state tests. But this list is not exhaustive. Please review the driver’s handbook for details on Maryland state laws and for how to prepare for your written and practical driving tests.

Identification requirements

Applicants must present acceptable documents establishing your identity/birthdate, residency, and provide your Social Security Number (SSN), if eligible. Documents must be original or certified copies. Applicants must not provide photocopies or self-laminated documents.

Age Requirements

Young-driver licensing rules in Maryland under the Graduated Driver Licensing (GDL) system:

  • Learner’s permit: Minimum age 15 years, 9 months. Applicants under 16 must have parent/guardian co-sign and supply proof of school attendance.
  • Provisional (“intermediate”) license: Minimum age 16 years, 6 months, after having the learner’s permit for a minimum of 9 months and completing at least 60 hours of supervised driving (including 10 at night) plus a driver-education course.
  • Full unrestricted license: At age 18, once the provisional license phase (18 months minimum) is complete and all requirements met.
  • Additional restrictions for under-18 drivers: No cell-phone use while driving, passenger limits (no passengers under 18 for the first 151 days of the provisional license), and other sanctions for moving-violation convictions.
Knowledge Test

The test contains questions on traffic laws, road signs and rules of safe driving. All questions are based on the materials found in a driver’s handbook.

Maryland‘s knowledge test consists of 25 questions of which 22 must be answered correctly to receive a passing grade.

Vision Requirements

Any applicants requiring corrective lenses must wear them whilst taking the test. If the applicant fails the vision examination and it is determined that lenses are needed then the applicant will be required to wear them whilst driving.
