Key Massachusetts Test Information
We have pulled out some important highlights of information related to the Massachusetts state tests. But this list is not exhaustive. Please review the driver’s handbook for details on Massachusetts state laws and for how to prepare
for your written and practical driving tests.
Identification requirements
Applicants must present acceptable documents establishing your identity/birthdate, residency, and provide your Social Security Number (SSN), if eligible. Documents must be original or certified copies. Applicants must not provide photocopies or self-laminated documents.
Age Requirements
Young-driver licensing rules in Massachusetts under its Graduated Driver Licensing (GDL) program:
- Learner’s permit: Eligible at age 16. Applicants must complete a driver’s education program before or soon after getting the permit.
- Junior Operator License (intermediate): After the permit phase, drivers under 18 hold a “Junior Operator” license. Primary restrictions include no driving between 12:30 a.m. and 5 a.m. and limits on young passengers (especially for the first 6 months) unless a 21-year-old licensed driver is present.
- Full, unrestricted license: Becomes available at age 18, or earlier if certain criteria are met (e.g., hold the Junior Operator license for a minimum period and maintain a clean driving record).
Knowledge Test
The test contains questions on traffic laws, road signs and rules of safe driving. All questions are based on the materials found in a driver’s handbook.
Massachusetts‘s knowledge test consists of 25 questions of which 18 must be answered correctly to receive a passing grade.
Vision Requirements
Any applicants requiring corrective lenses must wear them whilst taking the test. If the applicant fails the vision examination and it is determined that lenses are needed then the applicant will be required to wear them whilst driving.
