Key Michigan Test Information

We have pulled out some important highlights of information related to the Michigan state tests. But this list is not exhaustive. Please review the driver’s handbook for details on Michigan state laws and for how to prepare for your written and practical driving tests.

Identification requirements

Applicants must present acceptable documents establishing your identity/birthdate, residency, and provide your Social Security Number (SSN), if eligible. Documents must be original or certified copies. Applicants must not provide photocopies or self-laminated documents.

Age Requirements

Young-driver licensing rules in Michigan under its Graduated Driver Licensing (GDL) program:

  • Learner’s stage (Level 1): You may begin driver education at age 14 years, 8 months, and apply for the Level 1 learner’s license at age 14 years, 9 months; during this level you must drive only with a licensed adult 21+ years old.
  • Intermediate license (Level 2): At age 16 you become eligible for the Level 2 license (after required education, log of supervised driving hours, and holding Level 1 for a minimum period). This stage includes restrictions such as no more than one passenger under 21 and no driving between 10 p.m.–5 a.m. (with limited exceptions) until you qualify for full privileges.
  • Full-privilege license (Level 3): At age 17 (after at least six months at Level 2 and a year of crash- and violation-free driving) you qualify for the unrestricted Level 3 license.
Knowledge Test

The test contains questions on traffic laws, road signs and rules of safe driving. All questions are based on the materials found in a driver’s handbook.

Michigan‘s knowledge test consists of 50 questions of which 40 must be answered correctly to receive a passing grade.

Vision Requirements

Any applicants requiring corrective lenses must wear them whilst taking the test. If the applicant fails the vision examination and it is determined that lenses are needed then the applicant will be required to wear them whilst driving.
