Key Mississippi Test Information

We have pulled out some important highlights of information related to the Mississippi state tests. But this list is not exhaustive. Please review the driver’s handbook for details on Mississippi state laws and for how to prepare for your written and practical driving tests.

Identification requirements

Applicants must present acceptable documents establishing your identity/birthdate, residency, and provide your Social Security Number (SSN), if eligible. Documents must be original or certified copies. Applicants must not provide photocopies or self-laminated documents.

Age Requirements

Young-driver licensing rules in Mississippi:

  • Learner’s Permit: Available at age 15. Must pass the written and vision tests and show school-attendance proof.
  • Intermediate/Unrestricted License: To get a full regular driver’s license (Class R) at age 16, you must have held the learner’s permit for 12 months (or until your 17th birthday, whichever comes first) if under 17.
  • Night-Driving Curfew (Under 17): For newly licensed drivers under 17, unsupervised driving is prohibited between 10:00 p.m.–6:00 a.m. (Sunday–Thursday) and 11:30 p.m.–6:00 a.m. (Friday–Saturday).
  • Full Privileges: After the above permit-holding and curfew phases, holders of the Class R license have full driving privileges once age- and holding-period requirements are met.
Knowledge Test

The test contains questions on traffic laws, road signs and rules of safe driving. All questions are based on the materials found in a driver’s handbook.

Mississippi‘s knowledge test consists of 30 questions of which 24 must be answered correctly to receive a passing grade.

Vision Requirements

Any applicants requiring corrective lenses must wear them whilst taking the test. If the applicant fails the vision examination and it is determined that lenses are needed then the applicant will be required to wear them whilst driving.
