Key Missouri Test Information
We have pulled out some important highlights of information related to the Missouri state tests. But this list is not exhaustive. Please review the driver’s handbook for details on Missouri state laws and for how to prepare
for your written and practical driving tests.
Identification requirements
Applicants must present acceptable documents establishing your identity/birthdate, residency, and provide your Social Security Number (SSN), if eligible. Documents must be original or certified copies. Applicants must not provide photocopies or self-laminated documents.
Age Requirements
- Instruction Permit (Phase 1): Minimum age 15. Applicants must pass vision, road-sign and written tests.
- Intermediate/Restricted License (Phase 2): After holding the permit for at least 6 months and completing 40 hours of supervised driving (including at least 10 hours at night), a driver may apply for this stage. During this phase, there are restrictions like no unsupervised driving from 1:00 a.m.–5:00 a.m. unless for work or school, and limits on young passengers in the vehicle.
- Full Unrestricted License (Phase 3): Available when the driver reaches age 18 (or if all conditions of the previous phases are met and other state requirements satisfied) and the intermediate-stage restrictions lift.
Knowledge Test
The test contains questions on traffic laws, road signs and rules of safe driving. All questions are based on the materials found in a driver’s handbook.
Missouri‘s knowledge test consists of 25 questions of which 20 must be answered correctly to receive a passing grade.
Vision Requirements
Any applicants requiring corrective lenses must wear them whilst taking the test. If the applicant fails the vision examination and it is determined that lenses are needed then the applicant will be required to wear them whilst driving.
