Key Montana Test Information
We have pulled out some important highlights of information related to the Montana state tests. But this list is not exhaustive. Please review the driver’s handbook for details on Montana state laws and for how to prepare
for your written and practical driving tests.
Identification requirements
Applicants must present acceptable documents establishing your identity/birthdate, residency, and provide your Social Security Number (SSN), if eligible. Documents must be original or certified copies. Applicants must not provide photocopies or self-laminated documents.
Age Requirements
Young-driver licensing rules in Montana under its Graduated Driver Licensing (GDL) system:
- Learner’s Permit (Step 1): You may get a learner permit at age 14½ if enrolled in a state-approved driver education program, or at age 15 (without driver ed) if you pass the written test.
- Restricted License (Step 2): After holding the permit for at least 6 months + 1 day, complete 50 hours of supervised driving (including 10 hours at night), and have no alcohol/drug or traffic violations during that period, you may apply for a restricted license. This stage has restrictions such as a night-driving curfew from 11 p.m. to 5 a.m. (unless for work, school, church, or farm), and passenger limits: for the first six months only one unrelated passenger under 18, and for the second six months up to three unrelated under-18 passengers unless supervised.
- Full Privilege License (Step 3): Once you have completed the required period, or when you turn 18, the restrictions lift and you obtain full driving privileges.
Knowledge Test
The test contains questions on traffic laws, road signs and rules of safe driving. All questions are based on the materials found in a driver’s handbook.
Montana‘s knowledge test consists of 33 questions of which 27 must be answered correctly to receive a passing grade.
Vision Requirements
Any applicants requiring corrective lenses must wear them whilst taking the test. If the applicant fails the vision examination and it is determined that lenses are needed then the applicant will be required to wear them whilst driving.
