Key Nebraska Test Information

We have pulled out some important highlights of information related to the Nebraska state tests. But this list is not exhaustive. Please review the driver’s handbook for details on Nebraska state laws and for how to prepare for your written and practical driving tests.

Identification requirements

Applicants must present acceptable documents establishing your identity/birthdate, residency, and provide your Social Security Number (SSN), if eligible. Documents must be original or certified copies. Applicants must not provide photocopies or self-laminated documents.

Age Requirements

Young-driver licensing rules for Nebraska under its Graduated Driver Licensing (GDL) system:

Learner’s Permit (School or General):

  • School Learner’s Permit available at age 14 years for students needing to drive to school in rural areas.
  • Regular Learner’s Permit (LPD) available at age 15.
  • While holding a Learner’s Permit you must drive only with a licensed driver (21 +) in the vehicle.

Provisional Operator’s Permit (POP):

  • Minimum age 16 and must have held a Learner’s Permit (or School Permit) for at least 6 months, having either completed a driver-safety course or logged 50 hours of supervised driving (including at least 10 hours at night).
  • During the POP stage there are restrictions such as: no cell-phone use while driving; no more than one non-family passenger under 19 during the first 6 months.

Full Operator’s License (Class O, Unrestricted):

  • Once the driver has held the POP for 12 months (and if under the age of 18 has accumulated fewer than 3 points on their driving record in the previous 12 months) the unrestricted license becomes available.
  • If over 18, different rules apply for transitioning from POP to full license.
Knowledge Test

The test contains questions on traffic laws, road signs and rules of safe driving. All questions are based on the materials found in a driver’s handbook.

Nebraska‘s knowledge test consists of 25 questions of which 20 must be answered correctly to receive a passing grade.

Vision Requirements

Any applicants requiring corrective lenses must wear them whilst taking the test. If the applicant fails the vision examination and it is determined that lenses are needed then the applicant will be required to wear them whilst driving.
