Key New Hampshire Test Information
We have pulled out some important highlights of information related to the New Hampshire state tests. But this list is not exhaustive. Please review the driver’s handbook for details on New Hampshire state laws and for how to prepare
for your written and practical driving tests.
Identification requirements
Applicants must present acceptable documents establishing your identity/birthdate, residency, and provide your Social Security Number (SSN), if eligible. Documents must be original or certified copies. Applicants must not provide photocopies or self-laminated documents.
Age Requirements
Young-driver licensing rules in New Hampshire under its Graduated Driver Licensing (GDL) system:
- Learner/Practice Driving Stage: At age 15½, a student may begin driving when accompanied by a licensed driver age 25+ while practicing.
- Youth Operator License (Intermediate): At age 16, after completing a driver education course and logging 40 hours of supervised driving (including 10 hours at night). During this stage, restrictions include driving only between 4 a.m.–1 a.m., and for the first six months, carrying no more than one non-family passenger under age 25 unless accompanied by a licensed adult 25+ in the front seat.
- Full Privilege License: At age 18, or earlier if requirements are fulfilled and restrictions (night-driving & passenger limits) are lifted.
Knowledge Test
The test contains questions on traffic laws, road signs and rules of safe driving. All questions are based on the materials found in a driver’s handbook.
New Hampshire‘s knowledge test consists of 20 questions of which 16 must be answered correctly to receive a passing grade.
Vision Requirements
Any applicants requiring corrective lenses must wear them whilst taking the test. If the applicant fails the vision examination and it is determined that lenses are needed then the applicant will be required to wear them whilst driving.
