Key New Jersey Test Information

We have pulled out some important highlights of information related to the New Jersey state tests. But this list is not exhaustive. Please review the driver’s handbook for details on New Jersey state laws and for how to prepare for your written and practical driving tests.

Identification requirements

Applicants must present acceptable documents establishing your identity/birthdate, residency, and provide your Social Security Number (SSN), if eligible. Documents must be original or certified copies. Applicants must not provide photocopies or self-laminated documents.

Age Requirements

Young-driver licensing rules in New Jersey under its Graduated Driver Licensing (GDL) system:

  • Minimum age 16 for a learner’s permit (must enroll in a behind-the-wheel driver-education program) or for the Examination Permit: age 17.
  • Practice & Permit Stage: The permit holder must be accompanied by a licensed supervising driver (21+ years old with 3+ years driving experience) and may only drive during certain hours (generally 5 a.m.–11 p.m. for the first stage) and with passenger restrictions.
  • Probationary (Provisional) License: Minimum age 17 (if permit requirements completed). Restrictions still apply: no driving between 11:01 p.m.–5:00 a.m., passenger limits (one additional passenger besides dependents or household members), and electronic device bans.
  • Full, Unrestricted (“Basic”) License: Available at age 18 once the probationary period (typically 1 year of unsupervised driving under the provisional license) is completed and all requirements are met.
Knowledge Test

The test contains questions on traffic laws, road signs and rules of safe driving. All questions are based on the materials found in a driver’s handbook.

New Jersey‘s knowledge test consists of 50 questions of which 40 must be answered correctly to receive a passing grade.

Vision Requirements

Any applicants requiring corrective lenses must wear them whilst taking the test. If the applicant fails the vision examination and it is determined that lenses are needed then the applicant will be required to wear them whilst driving.
