Key New Mexico Test Information

Identification requirements
Applicants must present acceptable documents establishing your identity/birthdate, residency, and provide your Social Security Number (SSN), if eligible. Documents must be original or certified copies. Applicants must not provide photocopies or self-laminated documents.
Age Requirements
- Teens can get an instruction permit at 15 while enrolled in driver education.
- A provisional license is available at 15½ after holding the permit 6 months, completing 50 supervised hours, and passing the road test. It includes a midnight–5 a.m. driving curfew and a limit of one passenger under 21 (non-family).
- A full, unrestricted license is available after 12 months of clean driving with the provisional license.
Knowledge Test
The test contains questions on traffic laws, road signs and rules of safe driving. All questions are based on the materials found in a driver’s handbook.
New Mexico‘s knowledge test consists of 25 questions of which 18 must be answered correctly to receive a passing grade.
Vision Requirements
Any applicants requiring corrective lenses must wear them whilst taking the test. If the applicant fails the vision examination and it is determined that lenses are needed then the applicant will be required to wear them whilst driving.
