Key New York Test Information

We have pulled out some important highlights of information related to the New York state tests. But this list is not exhaustive. Please review the driver’s handbook for details on New York state laws and for how to prepare for your written and practical driving tests.

Identification requirements

Applicants must present acceptable documents establishing your identity/birthdate, residency, and provide your Social Security Number (SSN), if eligible. Documents must be original or certified copies. Applicants must not provide photocopies or self-laminated documents.

Age Requirements

Young driver licensing rules in New York State (NY) under the Graduated Driver Licensing (GDL) program:

  • Learner’s Permit: Available at age 16.
  • Junior Driver License (intermediate stage): After holding the learner’s permit for at least 6 months and completing required supervised driving (50 hours including 15 hours in moderate-to-heavy traffic) or driver education.
  • During the junior license stage (under age 18): Driving is restricted — for example, in most of upstate NY you may only drive unsupervised from 5 a.m.–9 p.m., and between 9 p.m.–5 a.m. only for school or work purposes; you may carry no more than one passenger under 21 unless supervised by a qualified adult.
  • Full, unrestricted license: At age 18, or at age 17 if you’ve completed an approved driver-education course and submit the certificate.
Knowledge Test

The test contains questions on traffic laws, road signs and rules of safe driving. All questions are based on the materials found in a driver’s handbook.

New York‘s knowledge test consists of 20 questions of which 14 must be answered correctly to receive a passing grade.

Vision Requirements

Any applicants requiring corrective lenses must wear them whilst taking the test. If the applicant fails the vision examination and it is determined that lenses are needed then the applicant will be required to wear them whilst driving.
