Key Ohio Test Information

We have pulled out some important highlights of information related to the Ohio state tests. But this list is not exhaustive. Please review the driver’s handbook for details on Ohio state laws and for how to prepare for your written and practical driving tests.

Identification requirements

Applicants must present acceptable documents establishing your identity/birthdate, residency, and provide your Social Security Number (SSN), if eligible. Documents must be original or certified copies. Applicants must not provide photocopies or self-laminated documents.

Age Requirements

Young-driver licensing rules in Ohio:

  • At age 15½, teens may obtain a Temporary Instruction Permit Identification Card (TIPIC) so they can begin supervised driving.
  • To get a probationary driver license, they must be 16+, hold the TIPIC for at least 6 months, complete a driver education course (24 hrs classroom + 8 hrs driving), and log 50 hours of supervised driving (10 at night).
  • During the probationary stage (under age 18), restrictions include:
  • No driving between midnight and 6 a.m. (or 1 a.m.–5 a.m. after 12 months) unless accompanied by a parent/guardian or for specified reasons.
  • Only one non-family passenger under 18 unless a parent/guardian is present.
  • No use of mobile devices while driving and all occupants must wear seat-belts.
  • A full, unrestricted license becomes available at age 18, provided the teen has completed the provisional period with no serious violations.
Knowledge Test

The test contains questions on traffic laws, road signs and rules of safe driving. All questions are based on the materials found in a driver’s handbook.

Ohio‘s knowledge test consists of 40 questions of which 30 must be answered correctly to receive a passing grade.

Vision Requirements

Any applicants requiring corrective lenses must wear them whilst taking the test. If the applicant fails the vision examination and it is determined that lenses are needed then the applicant will be required to wear them whilst driving.
