Key Oregon Test Information
We have pulled out some important highlights of information related to the Oregon state tests. But this list is not exhaustive. Please review the driver’s handbook for details on Oregon state laws and for how to prepare
for your written and practical driving tests.
Identification requirements
Applicants must present acceptable documents establishing your identity/birthdate, residency, and provide your Social Security Number (SSN), if eligible. Documents must be original or certified copies. Applicants must not provide photocopies or self-laminated documents.
Age Requirements
Young-driver licensing rules for Oregon under its Graduated Driver Licensing (GDL) system:
- Learner’s Permit: Minimum age 15; must hold for at least 6 months. During that time you must complete either 50 hours of supervised driving (if you took driver education) or 100 hours if you did not.
- Provisional License (for ages 16-17): After the permit stage you may apply for the provisional license. Restrictions include:
- First 6 months: No passengers under age 20 unless family, and no driving between midnight and 5 a.m. unless for specified exceptions.
- Second 6 months: No more than 3 passengers under age 20 who are not family, and still no driving between midnight-5 a.m. unless exceptions apply.
- Mobile device ban: Drivers under 18 cannot use a mobile communication device while driving.
- Full, Unrestricted License: At age 18, or after the first year of provisional driving (whichever is sooner), the restrictions lift and full privileges apply.
Knowledge Test
The test contains questions on traffic laws, road signs and rules of safe driving. All questions are based on the materials found in a driver’s handbook.
Oregon‘s knowledge test consists of 35 questions of which 28 must be answered correctly to receive a passing grade.
Vision Requirements
Any applicants requiring corrective lenses must wear them whilst taking the test. If the applicant fails the vision examination and it is determined that lenses are needed then the applicant will be required to wear them whilst driving.
