Key Pennsylvania Test Information

We have pulled out some important highlights of information related to the Pennsylvania state tests. But this list is not exhaustive. Please review the driver’s handbook for details on Pennsylvania state laws and for how to prepare for your written and practical driving tests.

Identification requirements

Applicants must present acceptable documents establishing your identity/birthdate, residency, and provide your Social Security Number (SSN), if eligible. Documents must be original or certified copies. Applicants must not provide photocopies or self-laminated documents.

Age Requirements

Pennsylvania’s teen driving licensing under its Graduated Driver Licensing (GDL) system:

  • Learner’s Permit: Minimum age is 16. You must hold the permit for at least 6 months and complete at least 65 hours of supervised driving (including 10 hours at night and 5 hours in bad weather).
  • Junior License (Intermediate Stage): After completing the learner phase, you may progress to the junior license. Restrictions include no unsupervised driving between 11 p.m. and 5 a.m. For the first 6 months under the junior license, you may have only one non-family passenger under 18; thereafter the limit increases to no more than three non-family passengers under 18.
  • Full, Unrestricted License: Generally available at age 18, or at age 17 (if you complete driver education and meet other conditions) after having the junior license for 12 months.
Knowledge Test

The test contains questions on traffic laws, road signs and rules of safe driving. All questions are based on the materials found in a driver’s handbook.

Pennsylvania‘s knowledge test consists of 18 questions of which 15 must be answered correctly to receive a passing grade.

Vision Requirements

Any applicants requiring corrective lenses must wear them whilst taking the test. If the applicant fails the vision examination and it is determined that lenses are needed then the applicant will be required to wear them whilst driving.
