Key Rhode Island Test Information
We have pulled out some important highlights of information related to the Rhode Island state tests. But this list is not exhaustive. Please review the driver’s handbook for details on Rhode Island state laws and for how to prepare
for your written and practical driving tests.
Identification requirements
Applicants must present acceptable documents establishing your identity/birthdate, residency, and provide your Social Security Number (SSN), if eligible. Documents must be original or certified copies. Applicants must not provide photocopies or self-laminated documents.
Age Requirements
Young-driver licensing rules in Rhode Island under its Graduated Driver Licensing (GDL) program:
- Learner Stage (Level 1 – Limited Instruction Permit): Available at age 16 after completing a certified 33-hour driver education course. A supervising licensed driver (21+ years old and with 5+ years’ experience) must be seated in the front passenger seat at all times.
- Intermediate Stage (Level 2 – Limited Provisional License): After holding the permit for at least 6 months, completing at least 50 hours of supervised driving (10 of those at night), and passing a driving test. In the first 12 months of this stage the driver may carry no more than one non-family passenger under age 21.
- Full License (Level 3 – Full Operator’s License): Typically available at age 17½ or earlier if requirements are met: 12 months in the provisional stage, a clean record for 6 months with no moving-violations or seat-belt infractions. With the full license, many of the curfews and passenger limits lift.
Knowledge Test
The test contains questions on traffic laws, road signs and rules of safe driving. All questions are based on the materials found in a driver’s handbook.
Rhode Island‘s knowledge test consists of 25 questions of which 20 must be answered correctly to receive a passing grade.
Vision Requirements
Any applicants requiring corrective lenses must wear them whilst taking the test. If the applicant fails the vision examination and it is determined that lenses are needed then the applicant will be required to wear them whilst driving.
