Key South Carolina Test Information
We have pulled out some important highlights of information related to the South Carolina state tests. But this list is not exhaustive. Please review the driver’s handbook for details on South Carolina state laws and for how to prepare
for your written and practical driving tests.
Identification requirements
Applicants must present acceptable documents establishing your identity/birthdate, residency, and provide your Social Security Number (SSN), if eligible. Documents must be original or certified copies. Applicants must not provide photocopies or self-laminated documents.
Age Requirements
Young-driver licensing process works in South Carolina under its Graduated Driver Licensing (GDL) system:
- Beginner’s Permit (Stage 1): Minimum age is 15. You must hold this permit for at least 180 days (6 months) and complete at least 40 hours of supervised driving—including at least 10 hours at night.
- Conditional License (Stage 2): Once you’re at least 15 ½ and have met the permit requirements, you may apply for a conditional license. Restrictions include a curfew (you may drive alone only between 6 a.m.–6 p.m. (or until 8 p.m. during daylight savings)) and limits on passengers younger than 21 (no more than two unless supervised).
- Full License (Unrestricted): After holding the conditional (or special restricted) license for at least one year and if you’re age 17 (with clean driving record), you qualify for full driving privileges without GDL restrictions.
Knowledge Test
The test contains questions on traffic laws, road signs and rules of safe driving. All questions are based on the materials found in a driver’s handbook.
South Carolina‘s knowledge test consists of 30 questions of which 24 must be answered correctly to receive a passing grade.
Vision Requirements
Any applicants requiring corrective lenses must wear them whilst taking the test. If the applicant fails the vision examination and it is determined that lenses are needed then the applicant will be required to wear them whilst driving.
