Key South Dakota Test Information

We have pulled out some important highlights of information related to the South Dakota state tests. But this list is not exhaustive. Please review the driver’s handbook for details on South Dakota state laws and for how to prepare for your written and practical driving tests. 

Identification requirements

Applicants must present acceptable documents establishing your identity/birthdate, residency, and provide your Social Security Number (SSN), if eligible. Documents must be original or certified copies. Applicants must not provide photocopies or self-laminated documents.

Age Requirements

Learner/Instruction Permit: Minimum age 14. Must hold the permit for 275 days (or 180 days if driver education is completed).

Restricted Minor’s Permit: After the learner phase, applicants can obtain this and begin unsupervised driving between 6 a.m.–10 p.m., and with a guardian after 10 p.m.–6 a.m.. No outside-household passengers for the first 6 months; afterward only one non-family passenger under 18 is allowed.

Full Operator’s License: Available at age 16 after holding the restricted permit for at least 6 months, with a clean driving record and must complete 50 hours of adult supervised driving on an Instruction Permit (must include 10 hours in inclement weather and 10 hours after dark).

Knowledge Test

The test contains questions on traffic laws, road signs and rules of safe driving. All questions are based on the materials found in a driver’s handbook.

South Dakota‘s knowledge test consists of 25 questions of which 20 must be answered correctly to receive a passing grade.

Vision Requirements

Any applicants requiring corrective lenses must wear them whilst taking the test. If the applicant fails the vision examination and it is determined that lenses are needed then the applicant will be required to wear them whilst driving.
