Key Texas Test Information

We have pulled out some important highlights of information related to the Texas state tests. But this list is not exhaustive. Please review the driver’s handbook for details on Texas state laws and for how to prepare for your written and practical driving tests.

Identification requirements

Applicants must present acceptable documents establishing your identity/birthdate, residency, and provide your Social Security Number (SSN), if eligible. Documents must be original or certified copies. Applicants must not provide photocopies or self-laminated documents.

Age Requirements

Young-driver licensing rules in Texas under the Texas Department of Public Safety (DPS) Graduated Driver License (GDL) program:

  • Learner License (Phase I): Minimum age 15. Require completion of a driver-education course and hold the learner license for at least 6 months while driving only with a licensed adult 21+ in the front seat.
  • Provisional License (Phase II): Eligible at 16, after completing learner license requirements and DPS-approved driver education. Under-18 provisional drivers face these restrictions: no driving between midnight and 5 a.m. (except for school, work or emergency), no more than one passenger under 21 who isn’t family, and no use of wireless communication devices while driving.
  • Full, Unrestricted License: At 18, or after the provisional phase is completed without major violations, full driving privileges apply without the GDL restrictions.
Knowledge Test

The test contains questions on traffic laws, road signs and rules of safe driving. All questions are based on the materials found in a driver’s handbook.

Texas‘s knowledge test consists of 30 questions of which 21 must be answered correctly to receive a passing grade.

Vision Requirements

Any applicants requiring corrective lenses must wear them whilst taking the test. If the applicant fails the vision examination and it is determined that lenses are needed then the applicant will be required to wear them whilst driving.
