Key Utah Test Information
We have pulled out some important highlights of information related to the Utah state tests. But this list is not exhaustive. Please review the driver’s handbook for details on Utah state laws and for how to prepare
for your written and practical driving tests.
Identification requirements
Applicants must present acceptable documents establishing your identity/birthdate, residency, and provide your Social Security Number (SSN), if eligible. Documents must be original or certified copies. Applicants must not provide photocopies or self-laminated documents.
Age Requirements
Young-driver licensing rules in Utah under its Graduated Driver Licensing (GDL) system:
- Learner’s Permit: Eligible at 15 years old. Must complete a state-approved driver-education course, log 40 hours of supervised driving (including 10 at night), and hold the permit for at least 6 months if under 18.
- Minor Driver License: Once eligible (typically age 16 after the permit requirements), new drivers face restrictions such as no driving between midnight and 5 a.m. (unless supervised, for work/school, or in an emergency), and no non-immediate family passengers for the first six months without an adult 21+ in the front seat.
- Full License: At age 18 (or after the restriction period and clean driving record), full driving privileges apply and the teen-specific curfews and passenger restrictions are lifted.
Knowledge Test
The test contains questions on traffic laws, road signs and rules of safe driving. All questions are based on the materials found in a driver’s handbook.
Utah‘s knowledge test consists of 50 questions of which 40 must be answered correctly to receive a passing grade.
Vision Requirements
Any applicants requiring corrective lenses must wear them whilst taking the test. If the applicant fails the vision examination and it is determined that lenses are needed then the applicant will be required to wear them whilst driving.
