Key Vermont Test Information

We have pulled out some important highlights of information related to the Vermont state tests. But this list is not exhaustive. Please review the driver’s handbook for details on Vermont state laws and for how to prepare for your written and practical driving tests.

Identification requirements

Applicants must present acceptable documents establishing your identity/birthdate, residency, and provide your Social Security Number (SSN), if eligible. Documents must be original or certified copies. Applicants must not provide photocopies or self-laminated documents.

Age Requirements

Vermont’s young driver licensing under its GDL program:

  • A learner’s permit is available at age 15. The holder must complete at least 40 hours of supervised driving (including 10 hours at night) and hold the permit for 12 months before advancing.
  • A junior driver’s license is available at age 16 once permit requirements are met; during the first 3 months of the junior license there are no non-family passengers, and through month 4-6 only family passengers; after 6 months passenger restrictions lift.
  • A full/unrestricted license is available after holding the junior license for at least 6 months, or once the driver turns 18, whichever comes first.
Knowledge Test

The test contains questions on traffic laws, road signs and rules of safe driving. All questions are based on the materials found in a driver’s handbook.

Vermont‘s knowledge test consists of 20 questions of which 16 must be answered correctly to receive a passing grade.

Vision Requirements

Any applicants requiring corrective lenses must wear them whilst taking the test. If the applicant fails the vision examination and it is determined that lenses are needed then the applicant will be required to wear them whilst driving.
