Key Virginia Test Information
We have pulled out some important highlights of information related to the Virginia state tests. But this list is not exhaustive. Please review the driver’s handbook for details on Virginia state laws and for how to prepare
for your written and practical driving tests.
Identification requirements
Applicants must present acceptable documents establishing your identity/birthdate, residency, and provide your Social Security Number (SSN), if eligible. Documents must be original or certified copies. Applicants must not provide photocopies or self-laminated documents.
Age Requirements
Teens can obtain a learner’s permit at age 15½. They must hold it for nine months and complete a state-approved driver education program (including at least 45 hours of supervised driving, 15 hours at night) before advancing.
At age 16 years, 3 months (after the permit phase and driver ed), they may obtain a license with restrictions: no unsupervised driving between midnight and 4 a.m., and for the first year of licensure, only one passenger under 21 unless a parent or licensed adult is present; afterward up to three passengers under 21 under certain conditions.
A full, unrestricted license is available at age 18, at which point the curfews and passenger limits for under-18 drivers are lifted.
Knowledge Test
The test contains questions on traffic laws, road signs and rules of safe driving. All questions are based on the materials found in a driver’s handbook.
Virginia‘s knowledge test consists of 2 separate tests, the ‘Road Signs’ test and the ‘General Knowledge’ test. The signs test has 10 questions of which all 10 must be answered correctly to pass. The general knowledge test has 30 questions, of which 24 must be answered correctly to receive a passing grade.
Vision Requirements
Any applicants requiring corrective lenses must wear them whilst taking the test. If the applicant fails the vision examination and it is determined that lenses are needed then the applicant will be required to wear them whilst driving.
