Key West Virginia Test Information
We have pulled out some important highlights of information related to the West Virginia state tests. But this list is not exhaustive. Please review the driver’s handbook for details on West Virginia state laws and for how to prepare
for your written and practical driving tests.
Identification requirements
Applicants must present acceptable documents establishing your identity/birthdate, residency, and provide your Social Security Number (SSN), if eligible. Documents must be original or certified copies. Applicants must not provide photocopies or self-laminated documents.
Age Requirements
Young-driver licensing rules in West Virginia under its Graduated Driver Licensing (GDL) program:
- Teens can get a Level 1 Instruction Permit at age 15: Requires written test, vision screening, school eligibility certificate, and parent/guardian consent. Driving must be with a licensed driver age 21+ in the front seat, allowed only between 5 a.m.–10 p.m., and at most 2 additional non-family passengers.
- They may apply for a Level 2 Intermediate License at age 16, after holding Level 1 for at least 6 months with no violations and completing 50 hours of supervised driving (10 hours at night). Restrictions include no unsupervised driving between 10 p.m.–5 a.m. (except for employment/school/religious/emergency) and for the first 6 months no non-family passenger under 20, then only one such passenger for the next 6 months.
- A Level 3 Full License is available at age 17, after holding Level 2 for at least 12 months conviction-free. At this stage, the curfews and passenger limits lift, though zero alcohol tolerance and seat-belt laws still apply.
Knowledge Test
The test contains questions on traffic laws, road signs and rules of safe driving. All questions are based on the materials found in a driver’s handbook.
West Virginia‘s knowledge test consists of 25 questions of which 19 must be answered correctly to receive a passing grade.
Vision Requirements
Any applicants requiring corrective lenses must wear them whilst taking the test. If the applicant fails the vision examination and it is determined that lenses are needed then the applicant will be required to wear them whilst driving.
