Key Wisconsin Test Information
We have pulled out some important highlights of information related to the Wisconsin state tests. But this list is not exhaustive. Please review the driver’s handbook for details on Wisconsin state laws and for how to prepare
for your written and practical driving tests.
Identification requirements
Applicants must present acceptable documents establishing your identity/birthdate, residency, and provide your Social Security Number (SSN), if eligible. Documents must be original or certified copies. Applicants must not provide photocopies or self-laminated documents.
Age Requirements
Teens can get an instruction/learner permit at age 15 ½.
They may obtain a probationary license at age 16 after holding the permit for at least 6 months, completing required supervised driving (minimum 50 hours, including 10 at night) and driver-education.
Until they turn 18 (or for the first 9 months of the probationary license), they face restrictions: no unsupervised driving between midnight and 5 a.m. unless travelling between home/school/work, and no more than one non-family passenger under certain conditions.
A full, unrestricted license becomes available at age 18, at which point GDL restrictions are lifted.
Knowledge Test
The test contains questions on traffic laws, road signs and rules of safe driving. All questions are based on the materials found in a driver’s handbook.
Wisconsin‘s knowledge test consists of 50 questions of which 40 must be answered correctly to receive a passing grade.
Vision Requirements
Any applicants requiring corrective lenses must wear them whilst taking the test. If the applicant fails the vision examination and it is determined that lenses are needed then the applicant will be required to wear them whilst driving.
